randoms, on film

Kodak Portra 400, Canon EOS 500N

I like these random photos together like this. The light and color tones work so well together. The photos were taken in April and May.

In other news; it is really pouring down today and I did not dress accordingly - which I normally always do. I hate getting my feet wet! Luckily I now have warm wool slippers, coffee, cake and a napping toddler (even though it is too late to nap now...)

Cara shoots film

Why do you shoot film, Cara?

I play with film when I have downtime, time to myself. My camera is on its last legs and far too heavy to lug overseas/on strenuous adventures, so most of my photos are observations of everyday life: streets in the neighbourhood, hikes around town, breakfast, my housemate Johanna. I just moved from Adelaide (South Australia) to Hobart (Tasmania) and it’s a nice way to document the little things in my new surroundings, things I would otherwise forget. Like the time we shared a living space with a life-sized Mr Bean cutout, and the free flowers I scored at the farmers market.

You can see more of Cara's photos on her blog.

a favorite salad: white beans, tomato and feta

This salad has become a big favorite in our house. It is adapted from this recipe by Sweet Paul

For a filling dinner for Sølve and me, I use

3 fistfulls of dry white beans
1 red onion, chopped
2 cloves of garlic, finely chopped
a bunch of tomatoes, chopped
fresh parsley, finely chopped
a pinch of dried chili
feta, I use this
salt and pepper to taste

Cook the beans until tender. Fry onion and garlic in olive oil until soft. Add the beans if they need to be reheated (I normally cook the beans a few hours before I make the salad). Transfer to a bowl and add the tomatoes, fresh parsley, chili and crumbled feta. Mix well, serve while warm.

The last time I made this salad, I also added some shredded store bought grilled chicken and chopped arugula - a brilliant addition! I have also added diced pan fried salami in the past, which also is brilliant.

about this project

- every Monday I post the week's menu
- I also post what we actually had for dinner the passed week (because it is fun to see if we actually followed the plan)
- there might be links to recipes, but the menu will mostly just be basic ideas for the dinners - often just based on what ever is in our fridge, freezer and cupboards
- Saturday and Sunday dinners will often not be planned ahead because we have a habit of buying whatever looks good in the store when we are out grocery shopping Saturday morning

life via iPhone, week 23

There are more everyday stories in the life via iPhone set on my Flickr.

I've been contemplating wether or not I should drop these weekly collages and instead post a selection of "normal" sized iPhone photos. So far I have decided against it, because I already post those normal sized photos to my Flickr (and Instagram). I wonder how many of you follow my Flickr as well as my blog. If you don't follow my Flickr, do you pop over there every now and then when I post a link here? I wonder. I don't want to bother you with too much reposting, you know.

Any thoughts?

guest post: Zoo Payne's days

Today's post is brought to you by Maria, head mama of Zoo Payne, and one of my favorite bloggers. Following her everyday life - with three children, a husband and a varied selection of animals on their farm in Norway - is such a joy. Her photos always put a smile on my face! I recommend you bookmark her blog as well as her Instagram instantly.

Take it away, Maria!

My day starts between 6 and 7 am, when Freja (3 yrs) usually hollers from her bed "mammmaaaaaaaa" or "daddyyyyyyyy", to which of course she doesn't get any response (we're trying to make her stop it and choose the silent version of starting the day), so her big sister Ronja (8 yrs) who shares bedroom with her wakes up and reminds her that she can just climb out and walk in to our bedroom. So she does, eventually. If my husband has early shift, he's already up by then to feed the animals and himself.

The kids and I snuggle in bed for a little bit, before we get up and go to the bathroom. Freja is home with me and Falk (4 months) two days a week, the rest she goes to play school with her daddy/ my husband, who works there. Everybody gets dressed, then off to the kitchen. The girls are not very hungry in the morning, so they just have toast or a yoghurt. I make lunches and tea (although to be fair, Ronja has started making her own lunch box most days now. My big girl!), and they're all out the door between 8 and 9 am, depending on which shift my husband has that day.

Then I shower and have my breakfast, while Falk naps and Freja plays if she's home. I love oatmeal, so I'll always have that with some variation; either as porridge, baked in the oven, or like cereal with milk and almonds and shredded coconut.

I don't really do routines, so Falk is not on any type of eating/ sleeping schedule. I don't stress about it; I know his rhythm will come gradually and naturally. So he feeds when he wants and sleeps when he needs to, and the rest of the day is spent doing laundry/ dishes/ etc, going for walks in the fields and forest, hanging out with our animals, playing and generally faffing about quite a lot.

Lunchtime for us solid-eaters is usually between 11.30 and 12.30, and we'll scramble eggs, or boil them (but leave the yolk runny, importantly), and have that with buttered toast and cheese.

Ronja comes home from school at 1.30 or 2.30 pm depending on what day it is, and she'll have a snack and then be right off cycling. She never tires of it. We'll all be outside in the afternoon, playing, before I pop in and start dinner before my man comes home. We usually have dinner between 4.30 and 5.30 pm, and always eat together (well, if you can call what Freja does eating: one bite and then she's off again).

Then we have a cup of tea and go outside to do our farm jobs and help daddy out. It's feeding animals, fixing fences and tending our vegetable garden, and of course lots of playing. Falk hangs out in his sling so we can go everywhere easily.

Bedtime starts around 7 pm, with sandwiches and milk and stories. Falk goes off to sleep first, then Freja, and then Ronja. We always stay in the bedroom until Freja goes to sleep (like you, Astrid!), because it's nicer for her and quicker for everyone (if not, she'd just get up a hundred times and the whole process would take ages). We sing to her, she goes to sleep quickly. Ronja gets herself ready for bed, and then her and I read a chapter or two from a book, right now we're reading The Little Prince. She's off to bed around 8 pm.

When all the kiddos are asleep, my husband and I finish the daily jobs around the house and farm, and then we both go on the computer for a bit, before we sit down together for a chat and a beer. These days we sit on our front porch, in the sunset, it's so lovely. I feel so lucky.

We're in bed by 11 pm (I try to go earlier, but these light summer evenings are just too nice to miss), and I'm woken up by Falk for his nighttime feed between 3.30 and 5 am.

My days are quite wonderful right now, both because of the season and because I am lucky to be home on maternity leave with Falk. I cherish every one of them.

Thanks for having me, Astrid!
Love from Zoo Payne*

Sara's days

On this post ALittaM left this comment:

Silly question - dinner at 3 pm? That seems kind of weird for Italian standard. Is it normal in Norway? Does she have a snack or a proper meal in the evening? Oh, and one more silly question - what time does she go to sleep usually?

I find it interesting to hear how other people's daily routines are, so inspired by the questions above, I thought I would share how Sara's days typically are.
Sara (19 months old) normally wakes up some time between 06 and 07, after normally having slept through the night. Since Sara is "my job" these days (I'm still on (unpaid) maternity leave until the end of September), I'm the one getting up with her all weekdays. I change her diaper and dress her for the day. I'm still in my PJs when we eat breakfast. We are creatures of habit when it comes to our breakfast menu; fruit yoghurt with rolled oats and a bottle of milk for Sara, plain yoghurt with müsli and honey plus a cup of coffee with milk for me.

Before Sølve leaves for work, I take a quick shower and get dressed. Then it is play time. Either we play indoors, read books, have a dig in the sandbox, meet our friends C and O for playdate, go for a walk with the pram to the city centre to do errands or go to åpen barnehage (playgroup). Ca 11 am is lunch time.

Sara has one nap during daytime, usually around noon. Some days she only sleeps for half an hour, other days she will sleep 1,5 hour - maybe even 2 hours, if I'm lucky. Some days she naps on the go in her pram, other days she naps in her bed.

Some time between 3 and 4 pm she is ready for another meal. My husband Sølve is never home from work before 6 pm, at the earliest, so unfortunately we don't have dinner together as a family during weekdays. Instead Sara and I have early dinner (or second lunch for me) at 3-4 pm. I think most families have dinner at 5-ish.
After dinner it is more play time; most often outside. Sara can be a bit grumpy in the afternoon, and I find it easier to deal with outdoors. Then, at 5:30 pm barn-tv (children's television series) starts. I find it is a nice way for Sara to unwind before bedtime.

At ca 6:30 pm we start the bedtime routine; a bath (every other day), PJs, supper (always porridge), brush teeth, a bottle of milk in the armchair in Sara's bedroom, a few songs and the bed. Normally she falls asleep rather quickly (by 7-7:30 pm), but one of us normally have to be in the room until she falls asleep. Sleep training hasn't worked very well for us, yet.

I would love to hear how your days with your baby/toddler typically are. Anyone want to share? Leave a comment, a link to your own post, or feel free to email me if you want do a guest post about it here on Hei Astrid.

baked cod with creme fraiche mustard dressing and bacon

Sorry for this half eaten plate; I didn't plan on blogging the meal until it was too late to take a nice photo.

Yesterday I made a dinner that both Sølve and I decided is a keeper. So to remember it, I decided to share my recipe - as always, not a very detailed one - with you. The recipe is inspired by this, which I found when googling "cod", "creme fraiche" and "bacon" - which were a few of the ingredients in our freezer/fridge that I wanted to use for a dinner this week.

cod filets with seafood & fish spice mix from Santa Maria
(for Sølve and me I used 400 g of frozen cod filets)

a dressing made of

shallots
spring onion
garlic
celery
green bell pepper
creme fraiche
plain yoghurt
mustard
salt and pepper

Put the cod in an oven proof dish and cover it with the dressing. Bake until the fish is done - ca 20 minutes at 200 C.

Serve with crispy bacon, roasted potato wedges and a simple mixed salad (I used arugula, tomatoes and creamy balsamic vinegar).

The next time I make this, I will use fresh cod filets + add fresh parsley to the dressing.

summer Bergen with kids

One of my absolute favorite bloggers, Karianne of Mammadamen, kindly asked me to share a few tips about summer activities for kids in Bergen. Please head over to this post to read my tips + thoughts on everyday happiness.

Thank you so much, Karianne, for having me!

PS: If you haven't read Karianne's book yet, I highly recommend it! (It's in Norwegian.)
