Frankie: the photo album

While we were in Barcelona in July I got an email from Australian Frankie magazine. They said they were going to make a photo book and they wondered if I would like to contribute with this photo. Of course I accepted.

The first ever Frankie magazine photo book is now published and they say it looks great. It will be sent to the contributors during October. I can't wait to see the result!

This is what Frankie says about the book:

Oooh look! We’ve made our very first frankie photo album. Designed to inspire anyone who’s ever picked up a camera and delight those who just like looking at pretty pictures, the photo album features the work (and thoughts) of more than 100 amateur and professional photographers from around the world. You can pre order yours now from our shop. Hurry if you don’t want to miss out, ‘cause they’re limited edition and will sell fast.

GC Bergen: the tannery

My second article for GC Bergen is about a local tannery, ca 40 minutes drive from the city centre of Bergen.

Borge Garveri exports 98 % of their production, and 60-70 % of this is made into beautiful women's bags and purses for brands like Gucci, Alviero Martini, Calvin Klein, J. Crew, Coach and Tusting. Leather from Borge is also made into shoes for brands like Prada, Footjoy, De Niro Boot Co, Duckfeet and George Esquivel.

The contrast between these luxury high fashion brands and this down to earth local industry situated in a lovely landscape by a fjord on the west coast of Norway is quite striking.

See the photos from my visit to Borge Garveri here.

GC Bergen: the designers

Remember I told you about this new magazine that is out in Bergen? I promised to tell you a little more about the articles I wrote. I'm not going to say much, because you should rather get the magazine and read the articles (in Norwegian) ;-) I might upload the article to my work website at some point - I'll let you know when I do. Those of you who don't read Norwegian can at least have a look at the photos.

The first article is about the design duo Tveit & Tornøe. I have written about them before, in this guest blog post over at Bloesem, and in this post. See the photos from the interview here.

Glam City Bergen

If you live in Bergen (I know a few of you who stop by here do) you should check out the new magazine that was launched this week: GC Bergen. I have written/photographed 3 articles for this debut issue. I'll tell you more about it later.

Read more about GC Bergen on NA24 (in Norwegian): Satser på luksus midt i krisen

At the same time I'm very sad to see that NO magazine, that I have been a regular contributor to since 2004, needs to take a break. They are sure though that the magazine will be back once the credit crunsh is over.

Sandnes in Wallpaper

Who thought that the glossy lifestyle bible Wallpaper would ever find something in my hometown Sandnes worth writing about? Well, they did, and it is a pretty cool thing they found too.

Photo caption (and photo) copied from Wallpaper's website:
The recent series of Norwegian Wood projects has impressed with its experimental sustainable designs in wood. This innovative open-air stage has become a focal point in the centre of the municipality of Sandnes. The glass roof covers a level, flexible space, creating an acoustic shelter within the open public square - sound is amplified during concerts and background noise is reduced. The semi-transparent roof structure is supported on bunched columns in slender sections of solid, untreated oak – reminiscent of a cluster of trees.

Find out more about this project here: Atelier Oslo

Helen & Hard is also mentioned in Wallpaper's report on the best of recent Norwegian architecture.

Norwegian design

As I told you yesterday, I want to share some of the things I have done for NO magazine lately.

In issue 20 of NO I wrote about Norwegian design - clothing design, graphic design, product design and furniture design. Read the whole article in Norwegian here.

Btw, do you recognize the guy on the front page? It's Morten Harket from a-ha, one of the most famous Norwegian bands. Who didn't love looove Take On Me in the 80s?!

Here are the peeps presented in the article:

Swedish design

I have said it before; sometimes it feels good to look back and find inspiration and motivation in work I have already done.

Most of you know by now that I'm a regular contributor to NO magazine. Mostly I write about design, but I also write about food and drinks. In the next couple of days I'll share some of the things I have written for NO lately.

The theme of issue 19 of NO (published in April 2008) was Sweden. I wrote about Swedish design and other visual arts. Read the whole article here on my work website. Yes, it's in Norwegian, but here are some teasers for you who don't understand my language.
