break

This post by mav today made me order three magazine subscriptions; Bon Appétit (I too want to read more of Molly's great work), Gourmet (as a foodie and food writer how can I not want a regular portion of this mag?) and finally Vogue (I need a regular dose of great fashion too). Happy days for the magazine addict. Good thing that the dollar exchange rate is really good now compared to Norwegian kroner. Thanks for the inspiration mav, and also congrats on your new blog.

My recent travels to the north have been very inspiring, and I have a lot of photos that I will share with you in my Flickr photostream. The photo above is from my second day at Svalbard. We had just started the day's snowmobile trip, and took a break just to see the sun rising over the mountain. Our guide told us because of the polar night it was the second time he saw the sun for the last four months.

everyday life published

I have always been an eager photographer, and I have lots of albums filled with snapshots and great memories of things I have done in life. Digital photography and Flickr have made me see things in a diffenert way. Before I got my first digital (slr) camera in June 2004, I would for example never photograph a plate of grapes, the evening sun light or magazines like this. I guess I saved the film for capturing my family and friends having fun, and not just for remembering ordinary things. As time went by I started noticing these mundane things and moments in life, and I started photographing them. I also created a group on Flickr called my everyday life. It's a place to collect these mundande things and moments in life, almost like a photo diary.

As of today the group has 865 more or less active members. So it seems, I'm not the only one fascinated by everyday life. Karen is one of those people. She is not a member of my Flickr group, but she publishes a magazine - Karen magazine - made out of the ordinary. I don't remember when and where I came across Karen's magazine, but I was happy to find a personal note from Karen when I recieved the magazine by mail (you can see it in the photo above). See more photos from the magazine here.

Karen magazine has been mentioned in several publications, and it has been nominated Britain's best kept art secret by a journalist in the Observer. (I know several photographers on Flickr that see everyday life as art, here is one example.) Recently D2, the weekly glossy magazine published by one of Norway's financial newspapers, Dagens Næringsliv, published an article about Karen and her magazine (in Norwegian).

Read more about Karen magazine here, that's also where you can buy it.

my Moscow experience

Remember I told you I was in Moscow in September? You might have seen some of my photos on Flickr. I was there for work, and now you can read my story - in English - in the new international issue of no magazine. My second article in the magazine is about visual Portugal, mentioned here. There's a sneak peek of the magazine on the website.

The first international issue of no magazine was published in June last year. I'm not sure if any of you actually found it - did you? I'm very curious to hear if you find it in your part of the world this time. Let me know, will you?

Have a great weekend guys!

baby you can ride my bike

This morning while eating breakfast, I flicked through an issue of Australian Donna Hay magazine (thanks so much Deborah!). I instantly fell in love with this bicycling story. Such a lovely summery feeling. And so different from my own bicycling experience today. One word - snow...

I'm off to the mountains to celebrate a friend's 30 years birthday this weekend. Have a fun weekend - whereever you are in the world!

north

Remember NORD? Their website is finally up, and it's beautiful.

The background photo shown in the screenshot above reminds me a lot of the experience I just had on my trip north. A journalist and photographer from the magazine was also on this trip, and I know there will be some beautiful articles from this duo soon.

Btw, did you know that "nord" means north?

new no

A new issue of no magazine is out.

I have written about the visual Portugal. Some of you may recognize the talented Cristina who is one of the artists included in the article. I have also written about coat hooks, king crab and warming winter drinks. If you live in Norway, or happen to visit Norway these days, you can get a copy of no at the newsstand. All you other guys can have a sneak peek here.

girly galoshes

Remember I told you about the Norwegian Swims galoshes?

Swims galoshes are now available for girls too! I like how they have made the galoshes look so sexy... Take a look on the website for more photos and to buy the galoshes.

Check out the website of the shop Pur Norsk. They are giving away a free subscription to one of the magazines I write for, no. You might need a Norwegian address to get it, but I'm not sure.

comfort

The image above is from Domino Magazine. I saved it on my computer a while ago, and I stumbled upon it again today. I like the colors and the rustic, comfortable atmosphere.

Comfort is something I need today. My workday has been busy yet fun. You know those kind of days when so much is happening at once, you just have to take a time out, breath, and make a list of to dos for the rest of the day. I made the list and it calmed me down. I only checked one item on the list, but now I know what to do tomorrow. New things are happening and I enjoy it.

Now, at 5:50 pm, I'm getting ready to bike home. Local media says Andrea, which the storm has been named, will hit Bergen tonight. Sounds like "tonight" is now. It is going to be a very wet ride home. No doubt I'll light the fireplace and have some red wine when I get home. I'm sure it will make me plenty comfortable.

happy, rainy Wednesday

There are certain things that make this girl happy on a very rainy, very wet, very grey autumn day. Crisp bread with Philadelphia creme cheese, Provence ham and cucumber is one thing. I have already had 8 of them today (!). Buying tickets to Berlin to meet up with a certain German couple and a certain Canadian couple is another thing. Knowing that she is going to lounge on the sofa with her boyfriend tonight and watch more episodes of the West Wing on DVD, is even another thing that makes her happy.

And then there is the one thing that makes this very magazine addicted girl super happy - 25 % off all foreign magazines at Narvesen for three weeks. Knowing that most foreign magazines usually cost around $22/£9/€13, you might understand why this gets me so worked up. I'm ready for magazine galore!

THE front page

Have you heard of the Norwegian band Turbonegro? The band's vocalist Hans Erik Husby, aka Hank von Helvete (meaning Hank from Hell) is on the front page of no magazine's newest issue. What do you think? I love it!

Take a look inside the magazine, and you will find me presented as one of the magazine's contributors. Oh! The shameless self promotion! ;-)

There will be a new international issue of no magazine coming out before Christmas. I'll let you know when it's out.

Last Friday I showed you photos I like of people sleeping, this week I will should you my Flickr favorites of empty beds.
rest - wyken - bed - untitled - 302.jpg - morning sun - vera pillows - keegan's bed - homage to eshu - morning 2 - DSC00605 - Morning - untitled - fresh - Det aller helligste IV - brightness - winter light

I'm off for a roadtrip for a couple of days. See you again next week.

cabin life

I had a nice relaxing evening on the sofa with a couple of magazines last night. One of my favorite past times! I found an article that I wanted to share with you. It's from a family cabin nearby Oslo. So lovely and evocative. It instantly made me want to go hiking and spend time at a mountain cabin.

See the rest of the photos here. Enjoy!

I'm Boo

I simple love the shape and name of this carafe. I'm Boo. It's by the great Norwegian design group Norway Says for Danish Muuto.

On their website it says that Muuto is striving to expand the Scandinavian design tradition with fresh and original perspectives. The name Muuto is inspired by the Finish word "muutos", which means "fresh perspective".

Norway Says about I'm Boo: Boo is like the skin, or a balloon surrounding the water with openings that tell the simple story of fluid motion in and out of the glass. The carafe exudes a strong personality , as if it's saying: "I'm Boo, who are you?".

Wallpaper likes I'm Boo: "Norwegian triumvirate Torbjørn Anderssen, Andreas Engsvik and Espen Voll are preoccupied with things that speak. As a collaborative they call themselves "Norway Says", and now they've designed a carafe for the Danish design group Muuto called "I'm Boo". The carafe, which comes in blue-grey or purple glass, is a design classic with a twist; a side pourer lends the elegantly curved oblong a quirky irreverence."

magazine inspiration

Earlier in September mav of port2port showed us inspiring books and magazines from her coffee table. I love the idea, and I want to do the same. I have heaps of great books and magazines just waiting to be shown of to more people.

I'll start with a magazine I have shown on Flickr before - Scandinavian Living. It's really beautiful, and I wish it was still out. The front page photo is my favorite. I wish I could have a big print of it on my wall. When Sølve gets home from France with our digital camera, I'll take some more photos of the magazine.

food + magazines

A new Norwegian food magazine hit the newsstands today: Smart Mat. I flipped trough it and it looks promising. Nice articles and photos. What I didn't like, and especially not for the first issue of a new magazine, is the price - 79 kroner, which is about $14/£7/€10...

Harald tipped me about GOOD magazine. I'm curious about it, so I'm going to check out the website when I have finished all my upcoming deadlines. Do you know this magazine?

The photo above was taken a while ago. It's king oyster mushrooms from Den blinde ku (the blind cow). Here is a similar photo.

no international

Today I'm proud to present no magazine and the first international issue. It was launched in New York last week.

I've worked with no (btw, it's not no like in negative, it's like .no in web addresses) ever since I started my writing career four years ago. It's been fun seeing the magazine develop and become - in my opinion - a really great unisex lifestyle magazine. There's nothing like it on the Norwegian market, and it's worth comparing it with international titles. I like the mix of themes in the articles (from cars, music and traveling stories, to art, design and fashion), the excellent photography and the playful yet elegant design and layout.

My contribution to no international is two articles; one about Norwegian design and an interview with the manager of the Norwegian furniture manufacturer LK Hjelle.

no international is, of course, in English and it's published in the following countries: Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Croatia, Cyprus, Malta, Holland, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, South-Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, Germany, USA, UK, Austria.

more NORD love

Yay! The second issue of the Norwegian food magazine NORD is out (I first wrote about it here). It's as beautiful and inspiring as the first issue. What I really love about this magazine (apart from the things I've already mentioned) is that the articles focus on the people first, then the recipes. Mav of port2port said it reminds her of the American food magazine Gourmet, and I agree.

A couple of mini tastes from the magazine, starting with the second photo from the top:

- Jæren, a farming area close to where I come from, has great food with tastes of both the fertile ground and the salty sea
- Smorgasbord is perfect with a cold, summer beer
- Summer in the great outdoors
- BBQ party for all your friends

Tomorrow I'll introduce you to another magazine.
