angels become bricks

My colleague Eva with her angel.

Some of you might remember my posts from Anne K's studio (here, here, here and here). Anne has started a lovely project called Engler gir murstein (translates to angels become brick). When you buy one of her angels the money is given to buy bricks for a village in Kenya. Read more about it here (in Norwegian).

In other news: Anne and the rest of the artists at the dock at USF are among the artists participating in the annual Kunsthåndverksmarked (arts and crafts market) in Bergen this week. It starts tomorrow at 11 am at Festplassen. More info here.

gone

As I mentioned here; now that we use Spotify to play music I want to get rid of our CDs. It's done! - and the book shelves looks so much better without them. We didn't part with the CDs completely though; that would be a hard task. We keep a lot of them a filing case like this in the car and the rest are at Åsly, the family holiday home.

How about you; how is your music/CD situation?

Art notes, from left: polaroids by my sister Mari, polaroid by Brigitte Heinsch (aka Maditi on Flickr), illustration by Sandra Juto, poster from Bergen Art Museum and drawing by Anna Emilia. We have some framing and hanging to do, including the two new Peter Lik photographs we bought in New York.

unexpected art

I had an unexpected art experience today.

I was in an underground parking garage to get our car. The garage is called Klostergarasjen, which means the monastery garage. I was surprised to hear music playing down there in the dark, humid, exhaust gas smelly space. As I got closer I heard that the music was a church choir, which is very fitting when you think of the name of the garage. But I didn’t see any people. What I did see was a screen with singing heads. The sign next to it said:

Bård Ask
Notri Viri Placet, 2005

Musikk: Jan Erik Mikalsen

It made me smile.

oh!

- was my thought when I first saw Norwegian photographer Rune Guneriussen's Singles series the first time (via Elle Interior). So, so good! They remind me of this photo by Tim Walker.

This is what Rune says about his work (via Polkadot.it):

I can’t tell in a few words about my work. Years have gone into planning each shoot. And remember, nothing is manipulated; it is like I saw it when I pushed the shutter-release. Bringing along this objects into nature gives at the same time a scent of reality. This way of working with installations in nature, is a way of letting our environment take an impact on the art and the imagery. Many times it even changed the finished results so significantly that it was inverted. In the moment of creating this pictures I am influenced by the planning, the surroundings, the objects and the current time it is made in.

From January 30th until March 7th Rune has a solo exhibition at Hå gamle prestegard (the old vicarage at Hå), which is close to my hometown Sandnes. Check this set on Flickr for my photos from Hå.

animal art

I'm not really much of an animal person. We never had pets when I grew up, except an aquarium, but the fish died. I'm scared of cats (they are mean and unpredictable), but I can easily admit that kittens are over the top adorable. So are puppies. Speaking of dogs; my friend J has a dog called Hama (a shiba) that I'm in love with. She's the kindest, cutest dog on the planet! Maybe she is spellbinding me into becoming an animal person...

I know one thing I love about animals though; photographs of them. Steve Bloom's outdoor exhibition Spirit of the Wild is an excellent example of breathtaking animal photography. So are these photos above by LA based Sharon Montrose (via unruly things). I simply love them!

You can get Sharon's animal prints in her Animal Print Shop and her Etsy shop (there is a holiday sale right now). Check out her blog too.

By the way, Sharon's home was featured on Apartment Therapy a while back.

Gone Fishin'

These Gone Fishin' prints are not new, but I just rediscovered them and want to share them with you who might not seen them before - because I really love them. Gone Fishin' is a collaboration between MAV of the always inspiring 3191 Miles Apart and Christopher David Ryan, a grapich artist who's style I really like.

Their collaboration Staring at the sun is also really great. All prints can be bought here.

Paul Davies

Such great work by Sydney artist Paul Davies (via Inside Out blog). It reminds me a bit of Danish artist Ann Sophie Stærk's work. Read more about Paul Davies here.

Sleep

I remember the first time I saw a photo of a sleeping person; it really captured me. I can hardly think of anything else more pure and peaceful yet vulnerable.

My heart skipped a beat when I was introduced to Regin Hjertholm's "Søvn" series. An exhibition of this series can been seen at Galleri S.E in Bergen until February 22nd. (Yes, I'm going to see it as soon as possible!)

From the gallery's press release:

Over the last four years the artist Regin Hjertholm has captured 4500 images of 112 sleeping persons over 66 nights. All the photos have been shot in the artist’s own studio in Bergen - where all models slept on a big mattress beneath a camera mounted in the ceiling. The automated camera took one picture every 8 minutes throughout the night.

A selection of 18 photographs will be presented at Galleri S.E - together with two videos portraying the same people seen in the photographs.

See more photos from the Søvn series on the artist's and the gallery's websites.

the concrete chair

A concrete chair in the city centre of Bergen, made by the art students Magnhild Øen Nordahl and Rasmus Andreas Hungnes.

"We want to give people in Bergen a new experience by placing everyday objects that everyone recognises in new contexts".

happy minimalism

Ann Sophie Stærk has been one of my favorite artists for a long time. Her work is often called happy minimalism and neo pop art. I would love to have one of her painting on my livingroom wall. Ann Sophie's boyfriend is Leonardo Annecca, he is an Italian designer and architect. Take a look at his inspiring work here.
