Alice shoots film

Why do you shoot film, Alice?

I shoot film because there is something consummate about the experience of it all, from the photographer's original vision to its transmutation into something tangible and the often long waiting period between these steps. Film immortalizes daily moments in a way that really tugs at my heartstrings. The tones, colors, light - film portrays and interprets these in a way that is simply inimitable. Film photographs make me pause to inspect all of the elements of that frozen moment and to imagine the events that transpired there, and for some reason, film just feels more genuine than digital. Film reminds me of the way photography all started, to really look before I shoot, to appreciate the fact that not everything is about instant gratification. (I should add that Lorena Arance's beautiful film portfolio inspired me to start shooting film in the first place!)

That said... I definitely want a wedding photographer who shoots film (if/when the time comes :)).

New York: the things we did not do

Canon EOS 500N, Kodak Ektar 100

We saw Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps last night, and the only thing I liked about it was the location - New York - which reminded me of this post that I planned to write. New York is an amazing city that I would LOVE to go back to. So here are some things we did not do during our visit in October, that I would like to do the next time we visit:

- we spent too little time in Brooklyn (we had lunch at Grimaldi's and dinner at Vinegar Hill House), so I would love to explore Brooklyn much more
- taste Mast Brother's Chocolate
- see Manhattan from a boat, for example the Staten Island Ferry
- a lot of people have recommended the city tour buses, so I think I would like to check it out
- see a Broadway show
- amateur night at the Apollo
- visit jazz clubs
- visit MoMA again (in the morning, when I'm not already filled up with other impressions)
- visit The Met and other galleries in general
- try out even more of Brian's excellent restaurant tips; Momofuku, Shopsins and Katz's Deli
- check out more of the Michelin guide's restaurant recommendations
- have another meal at Pastis, The Spotted Pig, The Standard Grill and Shake Shack (links here)
- visit Eataly
- see the city from above during daytime (we only did it at night)
- have a picnic in Central Park
- just walk the streets and explore
- maybe visit Coney Island
- attend a Sunday service in a Harlem church
- visit the New York Public Library
- maybe do a little shopping...

Any other suggestions?

The Dinner Project book

As most of you probably know by now, in 2010 I wrote down what we had for dinner every day, and every Sunday I posted the week’s menu here on Hei Astrid. I also photographed at least one dinner each week. And then I made this Blurb book.

The Dinner Project is a 160 pages standard landscape book filled with 365 days of dinners and 208 photos. It is available in both hardcover imagewrap and softcover. You can find the book in my Blurb bookstore here.

You can see more glimpses from the book in this set on Flickr and in the preview on Blurb. FYI: I have decided not to show the full book preview on Blurb this time (you can however see the full book preview of my other six books).

Curious about the dinner project? Click the label "the dinner project" to see all the posts.

PS: The giveaway will be announced soon.

things I like lately

An old favorite photo - and moment - taken on a snow mobile trip in Mehamn, Finnmark during one of my work trips with Hurtigruten. Click on the image to see it bigger. More of my own favorites.

- after being more or less sick for about three weeks, I really appreciate walking to the office again
- starting my Wednesday with a cortado at one of my favorite cafés in town, Kaffemisjonen, whilst flipping through the British edition of Elle Decoration
- discount on selected decorating magazines at Narvesen
- Stacey's photos
- Stylish blogger award from Lovenordic design blog (sorry, I won't tell 7 things about myself this time, here are my previous answers to similar challenges)
- Antonio telling me that my Minolta SRT 101 is fine, I just touched a button that made the mirror stuck
- sun!
- inspired by the link on Steph's beautiful self portrait, I cleared out my Hotmail inbox
- for various reasons I enjoyed and recommend these movies that I have seen lately: The Good Shepherd, A Good Year, Cold Mountain and Dogma (they are added to the movie recommendation list in the sidebar)
- 30 Rock is funny
- I love how Ann-Kathrin framed her cool huge burger bar shot
- when I walked home from the office yesterday at 5 pm, it was not already dark - days are getting longer peeps!
- Sølve is really happy with his new Spotify playlist - check it out here
- winterness
- a couple of beautiful double exposure shots: this shot by Brian and this by Lara
- a new to me Norwegian food blog: ferke(n)muffins
- Ellen's lovely home
- the dinner project book has arrived + the "from summer to winter 2010" book
- a pastel colored Thursday morning and then sun
- new sharing buttons below each post (I got it from add this)

fresh from the printer

The Dinner Project books arrived today and I'm really excited about it. If I might say this myself; they look really great! I will of course show you glimpses of the book soon, and it will also soon be available for purchase in my Blurb bookstore. And as I mentioned a little while ago, I'm planning a giveaway with one of these books.

my everyday life 2010

Every year I make a set on Flickr called "my everyday life *insert current year*" and when the year has passed I make the set private. I'm closing my everyday life 2010 soon. Please take a last look if you are interested.

Matilde shoots film

Why do you shoot film, Matilde?

I have recently rediscovered analog cameras. It started with friend of mine whose digital camera was broken, and she had to buy a disposable camera. In the start we made fun of it, but then found out it brought us back to childhood. I searched my parents’ house for old cameras, and found my old compact camera (that still had film inside).

I like to shoot film because it's so exciting waiting for the result. I often forget what I taken pictures of, so I don't know what to anticipate. When the negatives are developed, and I look at the result, it sometimes feels like I found something that I didn't know that I'd lost; a memory of a great moment.

You can see more of Matilde's film photos on Flickr and her blog.

Åmot Operafarm is launched

Do you remember my posts about Åmot Gard in December? The amazing hosts of this very special farm, Steinar, Yngve and Frida the dog (above), hired me as the copywriter for their new website. Yesterday was the launch of their new brand - Åmot Operafarm - their new design concept and the website. The launch was done with great style; sommalier Arne Egge chose the wines, chef Christel Eide made the nibblies and people were super happy.

Hisdal + Holcroft are the designers, Dagrun Reiakvam has taken most of the photos on the website, Kyber Kommunikasjon has built the website, and I have written the texts (they are not yet available in English, the translator is working on it). I will give you a heads up when the site is available in English. Until then you should browse through the site and be inspired. In fact, just a few of weeks ago CNN recommended Åmot Operafarm as one of the world's top destinations for 2011. Needless to say, this has been a very inspiring project to work on.

work

Some months ago I wrote some articles for Universum's publications.

I interviewed one of my favorite bloggers, Sigrid Bjørkum aka Siggelicious, about blogging and self PR for the magazine Jungle Career. You can read the interview (in Norwegian) here.

I interviewed Christine Koch Hatlebrekke about being a trainee in DnB NOR for Traineeguiden. Photo by my friend Gustaf Bratt.

I interviewed Ingunn Matre about working in Laerdal Medical for Universum Topp 100.

båttå

This is my kind of snack. My dad's family in Trøndelag call it "båttå". I have no idea where word comes from, but this is what it is: flat bread, sour cream, boiled potato and a kind of cured meat/sausage called morrpølse. When I get that special morrpølse from Trøndelag, I'm in heaven.

The knife is German craftsmanship and was a gift from my friend Mathias in Berlin. The big mug is from Norwegian Acanthus and the cutting board is from IKEA.
