everyday life

I was still full from breakfast, so he enjoyed the fish soup leftovers for lunch all by himself. The Saturday newspaper kept him company.

Flowers from house guests are the best kind of flowers.

I have loved honey since I was a little girl. I think it was my grandfather who taught me to love the mix of honey and cheese.

My namesake has turned 88. She keeps her habit of wearing sunglasses inside and prefers soft seats.

Maggie shoots film

Why do you shoot film, Maggie?

I have so many answers to this question, but the main reason I shoot film is for the connection. There is a fixed number of shots on a roll of film, so each exposure seems precious. I take my time; I frame the moment and adjust my settings, thrilling at the sound of the shutter clicking. I don't immediately know how the photograph has turned out, so I have to trust the experience. It's a kind of commitment, as well as an exercise in letting go. With digital, taking pictures feels limitless, and I snap, snap, snap away practically without thinking--which can be perfect for certain situations. But even the most beautiful of digital shots I get that way are often devoid of the emotional connection I feel with my film photos. More conscious of the making and taking of each photograph, every winner I find when my film is developed and returned feels mindful, valuable, and earned.

In our fast-paced and disposably instant world, that's an enormously satisfying feeling to get from something as simple as a roll of film.

summer breeze

My mom and I are in Skien visiting family. Baby it's cold outside! But inside is like a summer breeze thanks to my grandmother's blazing fireplace. Above are some glimpses of summer at Åsly - a stark contrast to today's reality.

By the way, my meet up with this lovely family yesterday was absolutely wonderful! Unfortunately I forgot to take any photos - we had too much fun :-)

sodd

Sodd is a soup-like meal with meatballs, mutton and/or beef, potatoes and carrots. It's a traditional meal from the Trondheim area where my dad is from (and where I was born). It's typically served for big occasions like weddings, funerals and birthdays. I absolutely love it! Especially when my grandmother or aunt make it - like she did when we were all gathered at her house in July.

Article about sodd on Klikk.no (in Norwegian).

By the way, if all goes as planned, I'm meeting a certain someone who lives in Trondheim later today. I wonder if she loves sodd as much as me.

Christmas gifts ideas

- especially for Bergen readers.

Today is one month until Christmas Day. Have you bought any gifts yet? I have! Several actually. Here is an idea for you who live in or near Bergen: The artists' studios are open until 7 pm tonight. Their art will make excellent Christmas gifts!

Click here to see all my posts about the artists at the dock at USF Verftet.

Also today: Exhibition opening with Anne K's work at Format.

And on November 30th an exhibition will open at Neptun Hotel with works by Marta Nerhus, among others.

everyday life

He is a great uncle.

That little slice of October moon made me smile.

Party leftovers. I kept them for three weeks.

Some November mornings are really pretty.

I worried the paint wouldn't come off the table, their hands and clothes. The box said fingerpaint, so I guess there was nothing to worry about.

everyday life: look down VIII

Looking down in October.

Some days require full battle gear.

Found on my way to the office.

The prettiest autumn red.

Big, dry fallen leaves are also pretty.

I have noticed that hydrangeas bloom well into October. The two in our garden have been really pretty.

Apple cake and cabin building in the mountains.

First snow came October 20th.

good bye, New York City

After that nice West Village walk, we packed our bags and headed to Newark airport. It was nice to see the sunset on Manhattan before we boarded the plane, and it was equally nice to see the city of lights from above.

Good bye, New York, you were good to us. Hope to see you again soon!

Sunday stroll in West Village

Sunday October 31st was our seventh and last day in New York.

We went for a little walk in the hotel neighbourhood; West Village. Of course I had to photograph these fire escapes - they are so New York!

We bought pizza at John's Pizzeria in Bleecker Street and ate it in the little park next to Magnolia Bakery. I had a chocolate cupcake as a starter.

Our waiter at The Modern told us that Sarah Jessica Parker (aka Carrie Bradshaw) lives in Perry Street and that the front of her house was used as the front of Carrie's house in Sex and the City. He also said that it has been closed off because people would always sit on the stairs and have their photo taken. Since we were in the neighbourhood we went to check it out. Sølve took this shot, but we are not entirely sure this is the right place ;-)

Sølve was amazed by this fire truck he saw while waiting for me outside Magnolia Bakery, so he photographed it. Twice.

Oyster Bar

After a bit of exploring it was time for a snack. Well, any time is snack time in my book, but now it was time for a proper meal.

Before we left for New York I asked ex Brooklyn resident Brian for tips on where to eat. He gave us a lot of really great tips (some of them are to be found here), including Oyster Bar. He said:

I think a classic NY experience is eating lunch at the counter at the Oyster Bar restaurant in grand central station (not in the dining room - too expensive).

So, that's what we did. Although we had dinner instead of lunch. The place has lots of character and the food was really great. We also started talking to the woman next to us; a fellow photo nerd who photographed her food and the chefs - just like us. Such fun!
