the view

This was the 6:20 pm view from were I'm sitting on the bed in our room at The Jane hotel. Isn't it georgeous?! When I stand by the window I see lots of the Hudson river, more skyscrapers and the Statue of Liberty. I love it! There will of course be more photos of the view, this fabulous hotel and this amazing city later. We're just having a little breather at the hotel before we're headed to Brooklyn for dinner with an old friend of our's from Sandnes. Happy Friday folks!

We were at Magnolia Bakery on Tuesday and we will for sure go back today to get me a birthday cupcake. I highly recommend birthday celebrations in New York!

arboretet

While we're on the topic of early season changes (snow in October that is), here are some shots from early summer in early June. A lazy Sunday walk in the arboretum at Milde. I remember that day as a lovely sun kissed taste of the season ahead. Well, time to snap back to reality, bundle up again and head home. At least it's not snowing anymore.

al fresco dining, part III

While it's still snowing like crazy outside I'd like to remember these days of early summer. These shots were taken on Sunday June 13 when we had grilled filet mignon of beef with Greek salad and garlic butter baguettes for dinner in the garden. Dessert was leftover roasted rhubarb from the day before. This very early snow of October looks pretty, but we haven't plated the tulip bulbs yet, so I hope it's not here to stay for the rest of the autumn and winter. Time to bundle up and head to the office!

am to pm

ca 8 am kitchen and livingroom window view

The first snow of the season arrived yesterday, and a lot more came during the night. I'm glad I didn't have to drive anywhere today as traffic was total madness - like it always is with the first snow. The local newspaper reports that there has not been snow this early since 1973. Normally Bergen gets a little bit of snow some time during late November, but in general we don't get a lot of snow at all. Except from last year which was unusually super snowy for a long, long time. On my way to the office I enjoyed seeing the yellow, orange and red autumn leaves covered in snow. Although I'm not quite ready for winter yet, I do look forward to the skiing season.

One of my favorite Norwegian architecture and design magazines, Nytt Rom, just launched an electronic version of the magazine. Check it out here.

Seed

As a gift for my very belated 30th birthday celebration my wonderful friends gave me the Seed lamp. It has been on my wishlist ever since I wrote about it more than two years ago. I'm very happy with it! So is Sølve. I've ordered another one for his side of the bed.

the day of the first snow

As mentioned earlier, I worked at home today. I enjoyed seeing the changing weather outside our livingroom and kitchen windows from dusk till dawn - including the first snow!

home work

I have some busy days with lots of interviews and articles to do for Universum. I hardly ever work at home anymore, only in busy times like this. In the productive hours I listen to my upbeat party mix at Spotify (find it here) whilst enjoying my guilty pleasures of instant mashed potatoes with sausage and waaaay too much vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce.

What are you up to today?

Chateau de Triac

Chateau de Triac is the home of Braastad Cognac. This is were we stayed during our visit to Cognac. It was fantastic! In fact you can stay there too if you want to. Contact the Braastad family via Braastad.com for more information. At the website you will also find more information about the chateau's history. PS: Cognac is on the house.

Allie shoots film

Why do you shoot film, Allie?

I shoot film for the simplicity of it. You look through the viewfinder and click, and the result never needs to be modified by a computer.

I began shooting film in high school, in a photography class, and continued in University. There was no such thing as the DSLR, so film was still the way to go for the best quality. I have never felt totally comfortable with digital, either, so perhaps that keeps me sticking with film.

I am happy to have a few really wonderful cameras, most of which were given to me by my husband’s Grandfather. Each camera has its own story and its own quirks, and I can picture what the image will look like when it is developed depending on which camera I am using. I love that.

In the end, though, I think I shoot film because it is more lifelike. You can remember the experience through the tones and light in a way that digital just cannot match.

You can see more of Allie's film photos in this set on Flickr.
