Sunday salmon

Sunday dinner was roasted Salma salmon (with olive oil, garlic, parsley, lemon, Maldon salt and fresh ground pepper) with blanched green asparagus and hollandaise sauce. As I mentioned in this post, we wanted to make hollandaise sauce from scratch for the first time. Unfortunately it was no success, but luckily Sølve had bought one that did the trick. It was a super delicious meal that I'm sure we'll make again (I LOVE salmon).

black & white, part V

Here are some of the friends portraits that I mentioned in the first post about black & white photography. The photo of me was taken by J, the girl in the photo next to me. You can find Gustaf over here. B is not online (yet?).

Black & white film + people are definitely a good match, don't you think?

You can see all the photos from this Rollei Retro 100 roll of film in this set on Flickr.

Alison (aka Supercapacity) shoots film

Why do you shoot film, Alison?

When I see my negatives for the first time, after having them developed, I feel the same giddy excitement that I remember as a child on Christmas morning, unwrapping gifts. There is a surprise in every box.

That’s why I shoot film.

You can see more of Alison's photos on her photo blog and her Flickr.

Saturday

We enjoyed a bit of bright light and a nice cup of coffee.

Sølve made his super yummy 3 hours fish soup on Friday, so on Saturday we had fish soup leftovers for lunch while researching hollandaise sauce recipes for the salmon/asapargus dinner on Sunday. By the way, I have been asked for the fish soup recipe several times, so I have finally made the fish soup master Sølve to write it down - it's coming soon!

We watched the annual Festival of Lights fireworks from our kitchen window. I got out the red tea light holders that are part of our simple Christmas decoration and Sølve put Handel's Messiah in the CD player. Today is Advent Sunday and Christmas is getting closer, so why not start getting in a bit of Christmas mood?

Last weekend we were in our hometown Sandnes and Sølve's parents gave us a box of apples from the garden at Åsly. These kind of apples are perfect for apple cake, so I made my first ever apple cake. I used my mom's recipe but I tweaked it a little, basically coating the apples in more sugar and cinnamon + a little bit of cognac, lime juice and acacia honey (these last things were Sølve's idea). It turned out better than expected. I'm glad there are more apples left so I can make at least another batch.

Sølve is an excellent chef. Everyone who has been to a dinner party at our house knows that. He hardly every opens a cookbook though, but while researching for the hollandaise sauce he came across a recipe for "tall steak with onion" in Norwegian Michelin star restaurant chef Eyvind Hellstrøm's book Enkelt & Perfekt (simple and perfect).

We invited a couple of friends over for a spontaneous dinner party. While waiting for the dinner to finish we had flirtinis in front of the fireplace.

These huge steaks with sweet, roasted shallots and red wine butter were beyond delicious. So was the lukewarm apple cake with Mövenpick vanilla icecream for dessert.

Hama was of course as cute as ever.

I hope you had a nice Saturday too.

PS: I have uploaded a few more photos from the weekend to my Flickr.

animal art

I'm not really much of an animal person. We never had pets when I grew up, except an aquarium, but the fish died. I'm scared of cats (they are mean and unpredictable), but I can easily admit that kittens are over the top adorable. So are puppies. Speaking of dogs; my friend J has a dog called Hama (a shiba) that I'm in love with. She's the kindest, cutest dog on the planet! Maybe she is spellbinding me into becoming an animal person...

I know one thing I love about animals though; photographs of them. Steve Bloom's outdoor exhibition Spirit of the Wild is an excellent example of breathtaking animal photography. So are these photos above by LA based Sharon Montrose (via unruly things). I simply love them!

You can get Sharon's animal prints in her Animal Print Shop and her Etsy shop (there is a holiday sale right now). Check out her blog too.

By the way, Sharon's home was featured on Apartment Therapy a while back.

mostly white

A beautiful home photographed by Pernille Kaalund/heyhome for the Danish home magazine Boligmagasinet (via the recently discovered great Norwegian blog fine ting og sjokolade).

I love this style; mostly white with splashes of color. And I think light grey might be THE perfect color for a sofa. Also, I've been thinking for a while that I'd like to hang small pendant lamps over the kitchen counter like in the photo above. Maybe some of these.

Yuwen shoots film

Why do you shoot film, Yuwen?

I shot with film for a long time, and switched to a DSLR about 2 years back. Oddly enough, I felt my love for photography wane - it just didn't feel the same. Didn't get the same sense of excitement and anticipation from getting the film back. Didn't look forward to the post-processing that inevitably had to be done. And because I'm too cheap to buy photoshop, the results were usually not so great anyway. I didn't even feel like uploading my photos, so that, along with my busy-ness in the last year or so, meant that it's been relatively quiet here.

On our honeymoon, dirt got into my DSLR lens, which was a killer. Luckily, I'd brought my film camera as well, and started shooting primarily with that (and a little digicam), and what a joy! It was relief to be carrying my old Minolta Dynax, thinking about each shot, and not being able to constantly look back at the review window. And then I got my film back, and was astounded by how different everything looked. Film seemed to capture the beautiful colours and the feeling of freedom and relaxation I had while I was in Greece with my new husband, in a way I'd not seen/felt in a long time.

You can see more of Yuwen's photos on Flickr.
